The Cusco School
by Eliot Stier ’09 - 11 Jun 2008
Our taxi turned off the main road and onto a one-lane dirt trail up a hill. After getting lost twice and having to ask directions, we finally made it to the gates of the Cusco School. The school was incredibly large; composed of several different buildings, and had an eerie similarity to Waldorfian architecture. I sat through my first class, which was trigonometry, hardly understanding a word being said. Luckily some of the other students were showing us funny videos, or playing music for us on their cell phones.
The teaching style was similar to Waldorf, except for the amount of time we spent watching educational videos; which was a lot. They showed us some pretty strange movies, including one called “Gato Blanco, Gato Negro” which I think was a Russian movie translated into Spanish, but I’m still not entirely sure. Afterwards I tried to ask some of the other students about it, and they were just as confused as I was, but still very friendly.
They took us out in the city of Cusco at night, and showed us the nightlife. Also, they gave us their email addresses just in case they ever came to America.
Unable to understand what was happening in the classes, and being in class with quinto grado, the grade just about to graduate, we probably ended up spending more time having fun than we did advancing academically. But we found out that there are all kinds of learning.
